Uncertainty over QUAD 2026: A matter of strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific
Former US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M Campbell has recently described India as a major power of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD). He said that India’s role has been very important in shaping this group and giving it an active form.
New Delhi: The QUAD group has once again become the center of global discussion amid the changing geopolitical equations in the Indo-Pacific region. Clouds of uncertainty are looming over the proposed QUAD Leaders Summit in 2026, raising questions over the future of this important strategic alliance. However, experts believe that this group will remain extremely important for regional stability and security.
Recently Kurt M. Campbell, who has been the former Deputy Secretary of State of America, described India as the “main pillar” of QUAD. He said that India’s role has been very important in shaping this group and making it effective.
What is QUAD?
QUAD, i.e. Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is a strategic grouping of four countries—United States, India, Japan and Australia. Its main objective is to ensure a “free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific”. The group is committed to upholding the principles of international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Why is there uncertainty on the 2026 summit?
According to reports, the proposed QUAD summit to be hosted by India in 2025 could not be held. Now there is uncertainty over the leader-level meeting in 2026 also. One reason for this is said to be America’s changing priorities, especially the speculation regarding the relatively less interest of the Donald Trump administration.
However, S. Jaishankar has clarified that the QUAD summit has not been canceled and cooperation is continuing at various levels. India is now preparing to organize a meeting of foreign ministers, which may take place in 2026.
Why is India’s role important?
According to experts, India’s role in QUAD is not just that of a member country, but that of a balancing power. Even during Joe Biden’s tenure, special efforts were made to bring India to this platform. This shows that globally India is seen as an important strategic partner. India’s geographical location, economic potential and military strength make it a major player in the Indo-Pacific region.
Why is QUAD important?
QUAD is not just a security alliance, but it is also a platform for multidimensional cooperation. Its main objectives are:
- Ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation
- Strengthening Supply Chains
- Ensuring availability of vital mineral resources
- Cooperation in emerging technologies like AI, 5G and cyber security
- Coordination in disaster management and humanitarian assistance
This initiative directly impacts the lives of billions of people living in the Indo-Pacific region. Although the member countries of QUAD do not officially call it an alliance against any one country, but many international analysts believe that it is an attempt to balance China’s growing military and economic power.
China’s activism, particularly in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean region, has prompted the QUAD countries to seek greater coordination. From this perspective QUAD is seen as a “counter-balance”.
