Electricity bill of more than 7.7 lakh houses reduced to zero due to PM Surya Ghar Yojana

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme is continuously helping India move towards sustainable energy, helping more than 7.7 lakh households get zero electricity bills through rooftop solar installations.

Launched in February 2024, this flagship scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore homes by FY 2026-27, for which a budget of Rs 75,021 crore has been kept. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on December 16, 2025, Union Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik informed that as of December 9, 2025, 19,45,758 systems have been installed across the country, benefiting 24,35,196 households.

This progress reflects the role of the scheme in promoting energy self-reliance, reducing electricity costs and advancing India’s clean energy goals. Beneficiaries can generate excess electricity to sell to the grid, thereby further reducing bills or even generating income.

Gujarat leads the way, with over 4.93 lakh installations, benefitting over 7.10 lakh households – of which over 3.62 lakh households are now seeing zero bills. States like Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Haryana are also showing good growth. To ease installation, the government provides substantial Central Financial Assistance (CFA) subsidy and unsecured low-interest loans at around 5.75-7%. Additional measures include vendor aggregation and RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) models to reduce financial and operational burden, especially for rural and economically weaker sections.

This initiative not only provides up to 300 units of free electricity to households every month, but also increases domestic solar manufacturing and employment opportunities. With easy online application through the national portal and large-scale awareness campaigns, the scheme is on its way to transform millions more homes, significantly contributing to India’s renewable energy goals.
