Unhealthy lifestyle, stress & more: Why stomach cancer cases are rising in India?
New Delhi: Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a growing health concern worldwide, with India experiencing a significant increase in cases. This rise can be attributed to various lifestyle changes, including dietary habits, stress, and physical inactivity. Traditionally, the Indian diet was rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. However, with the increasing availability of processed and junk foods, the average Indian diet has become more reliant on fast food, sugary snacks, and fried items. These foods are high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and sodium, and low in essential nutrients.
Dr Aravind Badiger Technical Director of BDR Pharmaceuticals, while interacting with News9Live, listed the many causes of increasing stomach cancer cases in India.
The consumption of preserved and pickled foods, common in many regions of India, has been linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer. The excessive intake of salty foods can lead to the degradation of the stomach lining and increase the chances of infection by Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that is a known risk factor for stomach cancer. The role of Helicobacter pylori infection in the development of stomach cancer cannot be overstated. This bacterium is found in the stomachs of millions of people worldwide and is associated with a higher risk of developing gastric cancer, particularly if left untreated.
Why are stomach cancer cases rising in India?
In addition to dietary habits, the modern sedentary lifestyle has also contributed to the rising incidence of stomach cancer. The shift from physically active outdoor lifestyles to desk-bound jobs, long hours of screen time, and minimal physical exertion has resulted in an increase in obesity rates in India. Obesity is a known risk factor for several types of cancer, including stomach cancer.
Stress, particularly chronic stress, is also a well-documented factor that can lead to a variety of health problems, including gastrointestinal issues. High levels of stress can contribute to the development of ulcers, acid reflux, and other stomach-related problems, all of which can increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.
Smoking and alcohol consumption are two well-established risk factors for gastric cancer. Genetic predisposition also plays a role in the rise of stomach cancer cases. A family history of stomach cancer significantly increases the risk of developing the disease.
The rising cases of stomach cancer in India are the result of a complex interplay of dietary, lifestyle, and environmental factors. To address this problem, it is crucial to promote awareness about the risk factors and encourage healthy lifestyle changes. Public health campaigns should focus on educating the population about the dangers of processed foods, excessive salt, and alcohol consumption, while also highlighting the importance of physical activity, stress management, and regular medical check-ups. Early detection, through screenings and testing for H. pylori infection, can also play a pivotal role in reducing the impact of stomach cancer on the Indian population.
