This is the story of 29 year old Meg Avon, who married a river and is now going to celebrate the third anniversary of her unique marriage.
Unique decision taken to save environment
Meg Avon, a researcher, writer and environmental activist, took this step not on a whim but with a specific purpose. They had a symbolic marriage on 17 June 2023 by the Avon River that flows in south-west England.
The purpose of this wedding was to draw people’s attention towards water pollution and spread awareness to save the river. Meg believes that if humans consider nature as a part of their life, only then will they come forward to protect it.
Deep emotional connection with the river
Meg says that their relationship is not just a symbol, but she actually feels a deep connection to this river. She goes to swim in the river every week, no matter what the weather. Even in winter, when the water can be cold and dangerous, Megs still go to the river. For them it is not just an activity but a special experience of connecting with nature.
Increasing engagement in new ways
Meg has adopted several new methods to further strengthen her relationship with River. She goes to different places on the banks of the river and swims, organizes programs there and meets people related to the environment. Through these activities, they not only live their relationship but also inspire people to come closer to nature.

Meg is also involved with an environmental group ‘Connham Bathers’. The group is working to achieve better water quality and ‘bathable’ status for the River Avon. Meg and her group are now trying to get the River Avon the status of a ‘legal person’. If this happens, it will become easier to protect river rights and environmental protection will be further strengthened.
