Clash over Kuldeep Sengar’s bail! CBI reached Supreme Court, challenged High Court’s decision
Kuldeep Singh Sengar Bail Suspension: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a tough stance regarding the bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the Unnao rape case, by the Delhi High Court. The investigating agency has filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the order of the Delhi High Court. Describing this step as necessary in the interest of justice, CBI has said that the High Court’s decision raises serious questions.
In the petition filed in the name of CBI vs Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the agency has argued that the nature of the case is extremely serious and suspending the sentence after conviction sends a wrong message to both the victim and the society. The agency says that this decision needs to be reviewed by the Supreme Court.
Not released even after getting bail
It is noteworthy that on December 23, Delhi High Court had suspended the life sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar pending his appeal. Along with this, he was also granted bail under certain conditions. However, despite this relief, Sengar has not been able to come out of jail at present.
Actually, Kuldeep Singh Sengar is also guilty in another CBI case which is related to murder. In this case he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, which he is currently serving. For this reason, despite getting bail, his release has not been possible.
This decision of the High Court is challenged in the Supreme Court
CBI had already indicated on December 24 that it would challenge this decision of Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court. The agency argues that in December 2019, the trial court had convicted Sengar in the Unnao rape case and imposed life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25 lakh.

After this, in January 2020, Sengar filed an appeal against this sentence in the Delhi High Court. In March 2022, she applied for suspension of sentence, which was strongly opposed in the court by the CBI and the victim.
Eyes across the country on the judicial process
It is noteworthy that the Unnao rape case came to light in the year 2017 which had created outrage in the entire country. The eyes of the entire country were focused on the seriousness of the case, the safety of the victim and the judicial process. After a long hearing, in 2019 the court found Sengar guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Now once again this case has created a stir in legal and political circles. All eyes are on the stance of the Supreme Court on the CBI’s petition against the decision of the Delhi High Court.
