CBI said, “The High Court did not take into account that an MLA holding a constitutional post has public trust and authority and in such a situation his responsibility towards the state and society is greater.” On December 23, the High Court suspended the life sentence of Sengar, who is serving life imprisonment in the Unnao rape case.

The court said he has already spent seven years and five months in jail. The High Court stayed Sengar’s sentence pending the appeal against his conviction and sentence in the rape case. Sengar has challenged the lower court’s December 2019 decision. However, he will remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in the custodial death of the victim’s father and has not been granted bail in that case.
