Unnao rape case: Women activists protest outside Delhi High Court, raise slogans against suspension of Sengar’s sentence

Delhi. Women activists and many people associated with social organizations, including the mother of the Unnao rape victim, demonstrated outside the Delhi High Court on Friday. The demonstration came days after the High Court’s decision to suspend the sentence of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar. The protesters held placards and raised slogans like “Stop giving protection to rapists” in support of the Unnao rape victim.

Activists of All India Janwadi Mahila Samiti (AIDWA) along with social activist Yogita Bhayana and the victim’s mother took part in the protest. The victim’s mother told PTI that she had come here to protest against the injustice done to her daughter. “I don’t blame the entire High Court, but the decision of the two judges has broken our trust and I am deeply shocked,” she said.

He said that earlier the judges had provided justice to his family, but now the accused has been granted bail. The victim’s mother said, “This is injustice to our family. We will approach the Supreme Court, I have full faith in it.” The Delhi High Court had on Tuesday ordered Sengar’s release on bail pending the disposal of the appeal filed against his conviction by a subordinate court in December 2019.

Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment in this case. The High Court directed Sengar not to go within a radius of five kilometers of the victim’s house nor to issue any threat to the victim or her mother. The court also said that the bail will be automatically canceled if the conditions are violated. However, Sengar will remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in the custodial death of the victim’s father and has not been granted bail in that case.
