Unni Mukundan headlines PM Modi’s biopic Maa Vande ; shooting starts
New Delhi: Malayalam star Unni Mukundan has started shooting for Maa Vandea new biographical film on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that promises to mix emotion, politics and inspiration on the big screen.
The film, directed by Kranthi Kumar CH, aims to trace Modi’s journey from his roots to his rise as the leader who, as the makers put it, “forged the destiny of a nation,” and is being pitched as a pan-India story of grit and determination.

Maa Vande went on floors in Kerala with a traditional puja ceremony, marking the official start of production. The team shared a launch video from the set, giving a glimpse of the rituals and the enthusiastic atmosphere as cast and crew came together to start work on the project.
The makers described Maa Vande as “a powerful biographical drama that celebrates Indian soil, a mother’s will, and the unyielding determination that forged the destiny of a nation,” in an official press release. They also stressed that they are committed to “maintaining factual integrity and emotional depth” so that the film speaks to “audiences of all backgrounds.”
On the film’s official X handle, the team announced, “#MaaVande now rolling! A New chapter unfolds to tell the story of the man who forged the destiny of a nation.” The caption highlighted their goal to showcase both famous milestones and “lesser-known aspects” of Modi’s life to inspire viewers with his story of perseverance.
The biopic was first announced in September, on the occasion of Prime Minister Modi’s birthday. According to the makers, the script is based on “extensive research and consultation with experts” to ensure accuracy in recreating key events and to balance the personal and political sides of his life.
Director Kranthi Kumar CH, known for his earlier work in regional cinema, is expected to bring a nuanced take on Modi’s legacy, with the film being shot across multiple locations in Kerala and other parts of India. The team says the drama will draw from real-life incidents and aims for “dignity and scale” in its storytelling.
Unni Mukundan, popular in Malayalam cinema and recently seen in Marcohas started preparing to play Modi onscreen. He is reportedly studying the prime minister’s personality and mannerisms closely to deliver an “authentic” performance that anchors the film’s emotional core.
