UP Congress President Ajay Rai wrote a letter to Home Minister Shah, said- ‘The situation of women’s safety is especially worrying’

Lucknow2 June. Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai, in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has urged for high-level intervention and ensuring accountability in view of murder, rape, organized crime, extortion, drug trafficking, police harassment and law and order situation in the state.

Ajay Rai has written in the letter that for the last several years, the Uttar Pradesh government has been claiming a crime-free state, rule of law and strict action against criminals. Police encounters are also presented as key indicators of the success of law and order. According to government figures, 23 criminals have been claimed to have been killed in police encounters in the first five months of the year 2026 alone.

Not only this, within just two days (6th and 7th May) in May 2026, information about 35 police encounters in the state has been made public. However, the kind of incidents that have taken place in many districts including Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Firozabad, Bahraich, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Agra, Saharanpur, Hapur and Fatehpur have raised serious questions not only on law and order but also on administrative accountability and priorities of governance.

Ajay Rai said that the situation of women’s safety is especially worrying. Incidents like gang rape of a girl student preparing for competitive examination in Lucknow, kidnapping of a girl preparing for NEET in Mahoba, long-term captivity and sexual exploitation of her for several days, trafficking of a minor girl in Varanasi and Chandauli are taking place.
