UP government made record in purchase of paddy, farmers of UP got big benefit
The paddy procurement process under the Kharif purchasing season 2025-26 in Uttar Pradesh was successfully completed on 28 February. This time the state government has gone ahead of the set target and registered record purchases. A new record was set by purchasing 62.30 lakh metric tonnes of paddy against the target of 60 lakh metric tonnes.
The government has claimed that this achievement has been possible due to transparent system, timely payment and technical improvements.
Purchase more than target, big payment to farmers
Paddy was purchased from 10.53 lakh farmers through 4869 purchasing centers across the state. The procurement rate of paddy (common) was fixed at Rs 2369 per quintal and (grade-A) at Rs 2389 per quintal.
In lieu of this purchase, Rs 14,886.35 crore was paid to the farmers. The special thing was that the payment was sent to the bank accounts of the farmers within 48 hours through Direct Benefit Transfer. With this, the role of middlemen was almost eliminated and farmers could get money on time.
Participation in registration also increased
This year 12,82,892 farmers registered to sell paddy. The Food and Logistics Department implemented the system of OTP based single registration, which made the process simple and transparent.
Procurement continued till different dates in different divisions of the state. In Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur of western Uttar Pradesh, procurement took place till January 31, while in Chitrakoot, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Devipatan, Basti, Azamgarh, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Rae Bareli and Unnao divisions, paddy procurement continued till February 28.
better performance than last year
Compared to Kharif procurement 2024-25, this year progress was recorded on every front.
Figures for 2025-26:
– Number of farmers: 10,53,561
– Total purchase: 62,30,735.63 metric tons
– Payment: Rs 14,886.35 crore
– Purchase Center: 4869
Figures for 2024-25:
– Number of farmers: 7,97,500
– Total purchase: 57,70,671.09 metric tons
– Payment: Rs 13,370.17 crore
Purchase Center: 4372
It is clear that this year about 4.6 lakh metric tonnes more paddy was purchased and about Rs 1500 crore more was paid. Besides, the number of purchasing centers was also significantly increased, which facilitated farmers to sell their produce nearby.
Farmers’ trust strengthened
The government says that the transparent procurement system and prompt payment system has strengthened the confidence of farmers. With timely payment, capital is available for further preparation of farming, due to which the production cycle is not affected.
Overall, in the Kharif procurement season 2025-26, Uttar Pradesh not only achieved the target but also left behind the previous year’s record. Increasing participation and better management indicate that concrete steps are being taken towards further strengthening the agricultural marketing system in the state.
