UP launches ₹5 lakh cashless health scheme for teachers
Varanasi: The Uttar Pradesh government has launched the Chief Minister’s Teachers’ Cashless Medical Scheme, providing cashless medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh for teachers, non-teaching staff and their families across the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the scheme in Varanasi, describing it as a landmark initiative to strengthen the health and social security of employees in the education sector.
The scheme is expected to benefit more than 15 lakh teaching and non-teaching personnel associated with the state’s basic and secondary education departments.
Cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh
Under the newly launched scheme, eligible teachers and their family members will be able to avail themselves of cashless medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh.
The initiative covers regular teaching staff as well as non-teaching employees working in government educational institutions.
According to the state government, the scheme aims to reduce the financial burden of medical expenses and ensure timely access to quality healthcare for education department employees and their dependants.
Over 15 lakh beneficiaries
The scheme will benefit around 15 lakh personnel connected with Uttar Pradesh’s education system.
Besides regular teachers, the beneficiaries include:
- Shiksha Mitras (para-teachers)
- Instructors
- Mid-day meal cooks
- Eligible employees of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas
- Non-teaching staff in the basic and secondary education departments
The government said the wider coverage reflects its commitment to extending healthcare benefits to all categories of education workers.
MoU signed with SBI
During the launch event, the Uttar Pradesh government also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India (SBI) to provide an expanded social security package for teachers and their families.
The partnership is intended to strengthen financial protection by offering insurance benefits alongside the cashless medical scheme.
Insurance cover for contractual employees
The programme also includes an extensive insurance package for eligible contractual employees drawing a monthly salary of more than ₹10,000.
Under the scheme:
- Personal accident insurance ranging from ₹30 lakh to ₹80 lakh will be provided.
- Permanent disability will be covered with insurance benefits between ₹30 lakh and ₹80 lakh.
- Partial disability will attract compensation ranging from ₹15 lakh to ₹40 lakh.
- Air accident insurance has also been included.
In addition, the programme provides support for the education of employees’ children and financial assistance towards the marriage of daughters in the event of an unforeseen tragedy affecting the employee.
Chief Minister highlights social security
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the government had fulfilled its commitment to protecting the health and social security of teachers.
He described the combined health insurance and social security package as the first initiative of its kind in the country for employees of the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department.
The Chief Minister said teachers play a vital role in shaping society and deserve comprehensive welfare measures that safeguard both their health and financial security.
Strengthening employee welfare
The launch of the Chief Minister’s Teachers’ Cashless Medical Scheme marks a significant expansion of welfare measures for education department employees in Uttar Pradesh.
By combining cashless healthcare with accident insurance and social security benefits, the state government aims to provide a comprehensive safety net for teachers, non-teaching staff and their families.
Officials said the initiative is expected to improve access to healthcare while enhancing financial protection for thousands of employees serving in schools across the state.
