Fire breaks out in children’s ward of Jhansi hospital; 10 newborns burned to death
New Delhi: At least 10 newborns were charred to death after a massive fire broke out in the children’s ward (NICU) of Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi on Friday night after a cylinder exploded on the premises. According to reports, 40 children have been rescued from the ward, but many remain trapped inside.
The explosion and subsequent fire left the entire medical college without power, and emergency services quickly responded. Fire brigade teams are currently on the scene, working to control the flames and assist in rescue operations. The district administration, including the Jhansi District Magistrate, has also arrived to oversee the situation.

CM Yogi takes cognizance of the tragic incident
The fire was initially detected when flames erupted inside the ward, and staff became aware only when the blaze had intensified. Panic has spread among the families of the affected children, with frantic attempts to locate their loved ones.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the tragic incident at the medical college. He expressed his condolences to the grieving families of the deceased children. CM Yogi has instructed district administration officials to ensure immediate treatment for the injured by promptly sending them to hospitals. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Chief Minister has directed the district administration officials and fire brigade teams to reach the scene and expedite the rescue operations.
The cause of the fire is suspected to be a cylinder explosion, but further investigations are underway.
