UP: New modern Vidhan Bhavan to be built in Lucknow, instructions to LDA to prepare design
Lucknow, March 9. The process of construction of a new modern Legislative Complex in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, seems to be gaining momentum. The state government has instructed Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) to prepare the design of the proposed new Vidhan Bhawan complex and present it before Yogi Adityanath for approval.
According to officials, the Housing and Urban Planning Department, in its instructions issued on February 4, 2026, has asked the LDA to prepare a detailed design keeping in mind the expansion and renovation of the existing Legislative Complex. Confirming this, LDA Vice President Prathamesh Kumar said that the authority has started preparing the design presentation as per the instructions of the government and the deadline for this has been fixed as April 15, 2026.
He said that after the design is approved, other processes including feasibility study of the project will be carried forward through a designated agency. After the inauguration of the new building of the Indian Parliament in 2023, the initiative to build a modern assembly complex in Uttar Pradesh also gained momentum. For this, the government has included an Ahmedabad-based company, which has also worked on the design of the new Parliament building.
It is noteworthy that a budgetary provision of about Rs 50 crore was made for this project in the financial year 2023-24, but the plan got delayed due to the land selection not being final. Many proposed locations on the outskirts of the city were rejected due to distance from the administrative center.
Meanwhile, about 130 acres of land in Sahara city area located in Gomti Nagar came into limelight in October 2025, when Municipal Corporation Lucknow sealed this land. The land was originally allotted for residential and commercial development in 1994–95. The existing Legislative Building is considered a prime example of Indo-European architecture.
Its foundation was laid by the then Governor on 15 December 1922 and it was inaugurated on 21 February 1928. The government believes that the construction of the new Legislative Building will not only meet the increasing needs of the Assembly and the Legislative Council but will also provide a better basis to modern parliamentary functioning.
