Urban poor consumers will have to pay approximately Rs 435 more per month

About 50 percent of the consumers with increased load are smart meter holders. Of these, about 25 percent are consumers who used to get electricity at concessional rates. But by increasing the load, the subsidy given to these poor consumers has automatically ended. In such a situation, consumers below the poverty line in rural areas will have an additional burden of an average of Rs 165 per month. At the same time, urban poor consumers will have to pay approximately Rs 435 more per month.

Increasing the approved load without giving information is against the principles.

State Electricity Consumers Council Chairman Avadhesh Kumar Verma said that this step is contrary to the tariff order of the Electricity Regulatory Commission. It is clear in the tariff order that consumers will be informed if there is excess load for three months. After this, consumers will have to send messages informing them that they have used more load than their sanctioned load during the financial year 2025-26. In such a situation, the sanctioned load is being increased from one kilowatt to two kilowatts. Increasing the sanctioned load without giving notice is against the principles of natural justice. Verma has demanded immediate intervention from the state government. He also demanded to ensure complete compliance with tariff orders and regulatory provisions in future.

double blow on smart meter consumers

Verma said that the Union Power Minister gave a written reply in the Lok Sabha that after installation of smart meters, maximum demand penalty will not be charged from electricity consumers. Even after this, it is being collected in the state. Along with charging fine, their sanctioned load is also being increased. In such a situation, smart meter consumers are being hit double.

1.70 lakh are BPL consumers

There are about 1.70 lakh BPL consumers in the state. There is a fixed charge of Rs 50 per kilowatt. They have to pay around Rs 300. Now consumers whose load has been increased to two kilowatts will have to pay additional energy charges of Rs 180 along with the fixed charge. In such a situation, the rural consumer will have to bear an additional financial burden of about Rs 165 per month.
