Reason for increase in fuel prices

There has been a continuous increase in the prices of petrol and diesel for some time. On May 15, 2026, the price of both fuels was increased by Rs 3-3 per liter. According to the government, the effect of rising prices of crude oil in the international market and increasing financial pressure on oil marketing companies is visible in the domestic market as well.

According to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the prices of crude oil have increased much compared to before, due to which the burden of under-recovery on oil companies has increased. He told that the price of crude oil in the global market has increased from $ 64-65 per barrel to about $ 115 per barrel. Due to this, the costs of the companies have increased and this has also affected the retail prices of fuel.
