Why did the prices of petrol and diesel increase?

The government had increased the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 3 per liter on May 15, 2026. Even after this, due to the high prices of crude oil in the international market, fuel prices were increased several times. The government says that this decision was taken in view of the rising costs and under-recovery of oil marketing companies.

What did the government tell?

According to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, crude oil prices were earlier at the level of $ 64-65 per barrel, which increased to around $ 115 per barrel. This has put huge financial pressure on oil marketing companies and they are facing under recovery of about Rs 1,000 crore per day. The government says that fuel prices were not to be increased for a long time after the year 2022, but due to the continuously increasing costs in the global market, it became necessary to revise the prices in recent months.
