UP: PhD student commits suicide by jumping from sixth floor in Kanpur IIT campus
Kanpur, 20 January. A case of suicide of a student has again come to light in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. This time, the student, who was doing PhD in Earth Science, committed suicide by jumping from the 6th floor of the building located on the campus. As soon as the information was received, the management admitted the student to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The student who sacrificed his life has been identified as Ishwar Ram.
Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Braj Bhushan told in this regard that the student was married. He lived on campus with his wife and children. The entire IIT family is in grief after the incident.
8 students have committed suicide in the last 2 years
If seen, the trend of suicide of students in IIT Kanpur campus is not showing any sign of stopping. Eight students have committed suicide in the last two years. IIT management and professors claim to have a better environment on campus. But suicide figures show the truth of the claims.
In the year 2025, three students and a software developer committed suicide inside the IIT Kanpur campus. From December 2023 to January 2024, three students committed suicide. Other students say in hushed tones that the reason behind these suicides is the stress of studies. IIT counselors say that a small percentage of average students take steps towards suicide due to extra pressure of studies.

Dr. Alok Vajpayee, who has been serving as a psychiatrist in IIT Kanpur for more than 20 years, said that there is a big shortcoming among the students, they do not share their problems. Most of the students’ problems involve studies only. The standard of studies in IIT Kanpur is very high. Now, students who are average will face problems, this cannot be denied. But these will be only five to 10 percent students. Similarly, 10 percent out of 100 students have mental problems.

Meanwhile, Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Aggarwal said, ‘We work very hard with the average and below average students in the institute. While they are given the facility of counseling cell, they have full support from the professors. Along with this, now students are also being given the option of supplementary paper, in which they are told that if they pass the supplementary examination then they will be considered passed.
