BJP MLAs expressed displeasure over power crisis

MLA Ashok Kumar alleged that the officials of the electricity department are not even listening to the public representatives. He said that due to irregular power cuts and strict checking campaign, dissatisfaction is increasing among the public, which can also have political impact.
Akhilesh Yadav took aim
National President of Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav cornered the government on this issue and said that due to the increasing anger of the public, BJP MLAs are also forced to write letters to the government. Describing it as a “great power crisis”, he claimed that the government’s power system is proving to be failing on the ground.
Government claims- record electricity supply
Energy Minister AK Sharma rejected the opposition’s allegations and said that Uttar Pradesh has made a new record in power supply. According to him, peak demand of 31,824 MW was met in the state, which is the highest level till date.
The government says that the demand for electricity has more than doubled in the last ten years. While the peak demand in the year 2013-14 was around 15,600 MW, now it has reached above 31,000 MW. The increasing use of ACs, coolers and other electrical appliances in every home has increased the pressure on the system.
Smart meter controversy increased the problem
Along with power cuts, the government also faced opposition regarding smart prepaid meters. After protests in many districts, the government had to change its decision and decided to operate smart meters in postpaid mode. The process of replacing old meters with prepaid smart meters has also been stopped for the time being.
Big political issue before 2027 elections
Political analysts believe that power supply has been counted among the biggest achievements of the BJP government. In such a situation, power cuts, smart meter controversy and displeasure of MLAs can together give a big issue to the opposition. The challenge before the government before the upcoming assembly elections is how to connect the claims of record electricity production and supply with the experience of the general public.
