Lucknow, 20 May. The scorching heat of May in Uttar Pradesh has now reached dangerous levels. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert regarding severe heatwave today and tomorrow (May 20 and 21) in 11 districts of the state including Prayagraj. After this red alert from the Meteorological Department, the Yogi government has come into full action mode and instructions have been given to everyone from the administration to the health department to take special precautions.
Situation is most serious in Bundelkhand and southern parts
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of severe heat wave in Prayagraj, Banda, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba and Jhansi from May 20 to May 21. The temperature in these districts may be 3 to 4 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Hot winds in the afternoon can prove fatal for people. The situation is considered to be most serious in Bundelkhand and southern parts of the state. It is being estimated that after three-four days there may be some relief from this scorching heat.
CM Yogi ordered monitoring
In view of the situation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to keep special vigil on sensitive districts. Also, it has been asked to ensure adequate arrangements for the treatment of patients affected by heat stroke in government hospitals. Instructions have been given to the Health Department to ensure availability of medicines, beds and doctors in hospitals. Ambulance services have also been asked to be kept fully active so that immediate help can be provided in case of any emergency.
The state government has instructed municipal bodies and district administrations to ensure adequate provision of drinking water at public places. Special attention is being paid to the provision of water in bus stands, railway stations, markets and crowded areas. The electricity department has also been put on alert so that power supply is not disrupted amid the scorching heat.
Do not leave home unnecessarily
CM Yogi has also appealed not to come out of the house unnecessarily during extreme heat and heat wave. Especially children, elderly and sick people have been advised to take extra precautions. The administration has appealed to people to drink adequate amount of water, wear light cotton clothes and keep their heads covered while going out in the sun.
According to the Meteorological Department, the time till May 21 is going to be the most sensitive. The effect of heat can be at its peak from 12 noon to 4 pm. Doctors say that continuous exposure to sunlight can increase problems like dehydration, dizziness, vomiting, headache and fainting. If timely precautions are not taken, heat stroke can also be fatal.
Special advisory issued for workers
The state government has also issued a special advisory for workers. Laborers working in construction work, fields and open spaces have been advised to avoid work during the afternoon. The administration has said that arrangements for cold water and first aid should be ensured at workplaces. Emphasis has been laid on giving the workers rest in the shade at intervals and feeding them ORS solution.
Advice given to cattle farmers also
Animal herders in villages have also been advised to remain alert. Instructions have been given to feed fresh and cold water to the animals several times a day. It has been asked not to tie the animals in the open during the afternoon and to keep them in a shady place. Veterinarians say that the extreme heat has a rapid impact on humans as well as animals.
Appeal to immediately contact helpline numbers in case of emergency
In this sequence, the administration has appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumors and if necessary, immediately contact the helpline numbers. In case of emergency, numbers 100 and 112 have been issued for police assistance, 108 for ambulance service, 1070 for relief disaster control room and 1077 for district disaster control room.
