Esha Deol REVEALS Hema Malini’s mother didn’t allow her to wear spaghetti tops and skirts ‘She was…’
In a conversation with Hauterfly, Esha revealed that she was not allowed to wear spaghetti tops or short skirts when going out.
Esha Deol and Hema Malini are considered an ideal mother-daughter duo by many. Both actresses have often spoken candidly about their relationship in the media. However, what people may not know is the special bond Esha shared with her nani (grandmother), Jaya Chakravarthy, who was also Hema Malini’s mother. Despite her love for her grandchildren, Jaya was known to be one of the stricter members of the family. In an interview, Esha recalled how her nani set clear boundaries, particularly regarding fashion.
In a conversation with Hauterfly, Esha revealed that she was not allowed to wear spaghetti tops or short skirts when going out. She humorously described her nani as a “CCTV camera,” always keeping a close eye on everyone, especially when they returned from outings. Jaya’s vigilant nature ensured that Esha and her sister maintained certain decorum during their formative years.
The actress shared, “My Nani was very strict. We weren’t allowed to wear spaghetti tops or short skirts and go out. And back then, CCTV cameras didn’t exist. But if they had, my nani would have been the home’s CCTV camera! When we’d come home, she’d be in the big living room, watching her TV—usually her South Indian shows. With her glasses on, she would always notice who was coming in. That was the only entrance to the house, so my friends would often come wearing a shirt over whatever they had on.”

In the same interview, Esha also discussed the advice she received from her mother. She mentioned, “Back then, only the heroines and hairdressers were women.” She continued, “Luckily, my mother had experience in this industry. She gave me tips to avoid situations where I might feel uncomfortable.”
For example, whenever she wore a short skirt during a shoot, her assistant would place a towel on her lap between takes. Similarly, if she wore a low-neck top, she was provided a cloth to cover up between scenes.
For those unaware, Esha is Dharmendra’s daughter from his second wife, Hema Malini. With his first wife, Prakash Kaur, Dharmendra had four children: sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, both actors, and daughters Vijeta and Ajieta.
