Upcoming Hyundai Bayon Spied In India

One of the important launches expected from Hyundai in the near term is the Bayon, an SUV that would be positioned between the Venue and the Creta in its lineup. It has now been spied testing in South India. Pictures of a camouflaged test mule give us a rough idea of how large the vehicle would be.

These spy images are from Vellore in Tamil Nadu. It was a convoy of three cars- two mules and an Exter ( most likely the support car). In the above image, we can see the test mule standing next to a Maruti Suzuki Victoris. This gives us a clear picture of how big the Bayon would be.

The Victoris measures 4.36 metres in length. The Bayon looks notably smaller, but should still be longer than 4 metres. Exact numbers haven’t been disclosed yet, although speculations point to 4.2 metres.

The sighting also shows that the Bayon will be significantly larger than the Exter. It will most likely be bigger than the Venue but smaller than the Creta. The Creta itself is slated to get a generational update soon. The next-generation model will be significantly larger. This would liberate enough room for the Bayon to fit in comfortably.

The Bayon is already on sale in multiple international markets. However, it would be the second generation that would be brought to India. This model is yet to make its global debut. Therefore, design details and dimensions continue to be under the wraps.

From what is visible in these images, we can confirm that the design of the new model will move closer toward the SUV side of things. The first-generation used to have a more crossover-ish shape. The A and C pillars are now more upright, and the vehicle has a tall, upright stance. There is heavy camouflage on it. So, it is not possible to guess the specifics of this design. That said, the vehicle seems to align with the newest design direction of Hyundai.

The new SUV will come with vertically stacked LED headlamps, L-shaped LED DRLs, and a full-width light bar at the front. The positioning lamp will highlight the width of the car. The design will possibly have a strong emphasis on horizontal elements- an approach that will help in increasing thew overall road presence.

When viewed from the sides, the new Bayon seems to have a flatter roofline, flush-type door handles, and a Blacked-out B-pillar. The production form may even get Black body cladding. These may be kept concealed under the camouflage on the test mule.

The spy images also give us a quick view of the Bayon’s tail lights. The SUV is expected to come with sleek LED tail lamps.

Compared to the first-generation, the tailgate here, seems to be more upright. This is expected to bring about a notable increase in usable boot space

The India-spec Bayon’s cabin could get a modern design and dual-tone colour scheme. It is likely to come with a long list of features as well. We expect to find the likes of a curved panoramic display comprising two 12.3-inch screens, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology, wireless smartphone charging, ambient lighting, head up display and level 2 ADAS, in the car. Many of these features will be shared with the second-generation Venue, Verna and the upcoming next-generation i20.

The upcoming Bayon will be based on the K2 platform. It will most likely be a petrol-only model. The carmaker will reportedly offer two engine options on the Bayon- a newly developed 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and the familiar 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol. There are also reports suggesting a naturally aspirated version of the 1.2L engine to be in the works. Time remains before we find out Hyundai’s actual powertrain strategy.

Hyundai will launch the Bayon later this year. The latest sighting confirms that the vehicle has entered the road-testing phase. It will compete primarily with the Maruti Fronx and Toyota Taisor here.
