Uploading offensive content? Be careful, it will be deleted in 1 hour on social media!

Many upload content on social media that is against ethics. The platforms delete it as soon as it is noticed. Recently the time limit for removal of objectionable content was reduced from 2 to 3 hours. This time it is going to decrease even more. Discussions are going on whether this time limit should be further reduced to one hour or not.

It has been said that social media platforms should remove offensive content within 2-3 hours. Earlier the time limit was 24 to 36 hours. Now the discussion is going on to reduce the 2 to 3 hours period to 1 hour.

Last February, the Ministry of Information Technology issued an amendment notification to the ‘2021’. It said that social media platforms should remove offensive content within 2-3 hours. Earlier the time limit was 24 to 36 hours. This deadline is the shortest of any government in the world. Now the discussion is going on to reduce the 2 to 3 hours period to 1 hour. In this regard, a government official said, “The matter is under consideration at the moment. The government can discuss. This rule may or may not be implemented. The past record of social media companies will be looked into while implementing this rule.”

Notably, the Center can allow the Home, External Affairs, Defense and Information and Broadcasting Ministries to block any content on social media platforms under Section 69(A) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. That power currently rests only with the Ministry of Information Technology.
