UP’s energy revolution, 3.93 lakh roof plants installed so far under PM Surya Ghar free electricity scheme

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has turned rooftop solar into a mass movement. The effective implementation of Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme has made the state a leader in solar energy expansion. This change towards energy self-sufficiency is not limited to mere figures, but has become an example of socio-economic change.

According to the national portal, more than 11.64 lakh applications have been received so far in the state, out of which more than 3.93 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed. About four lakh families are directly benefiting from this scheme. The total installed solar capacity of the state has reached 1,343.5 MW.

Subsidy worth more than Rs 3,500 crore directly into accounts

Under the scheme, subsidy of Rs 2,663.57 crore of the Central Government and about Rs 920 crore of the State Government has been sent to the accounts of the beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer. This has increased transparency and strengthened the trust of common people.

Uttar Pradesh has consistently remained among the top two states in the country in terms of installations since July 2025, reflecting strong administrative will and prompt implementation.

February 2026: Month of record achievements

According to UPNEDA, February 2026 was historic. 35,804 rooftop solar plants were installed in a single month. On February 28, 2026, the state created a record at the national level by doing 2,211 installations in a single day. This achievement reflects the pace of the ongoing campaign in mission mode.

On an average, 4 to 5 MW solar capacity is being added every day in the state, generating a daily business of Rs 20-25 crore.

Expanding employment and the solar economy

The scheme has given birth to a new economy based on solar energy in the state. More than 4,500 vendors are active and more than 60,000 people have got direct employment.

More than 60 lakh units of electricity is being produced daily from rooftop solar, the estimated economic value of which is around Rs 4 crore per day. Due to this, there is a huge reduction in the electricity bills of consumers.

Land conservation and environmental benefits

The major advantage of the rooftop model is land conservation. If more than 1,343 MW of capacity were installed from ground-mounted plants, thousands of acres of land would be required. More than 5,000 acres of land has been saved through this model, which is available for other development works.

There has also been a significant reduction in carbon emissions due to the expansion of solar energy. Now the state is also taking steps towards digital energy business model, which will open new possibilities for technological innovation and investment in the energy sector in future.
