100% tariff on India and praise too! Questions raised on Trump’s ‘double move’, former Foreign Secretary said – ‘Will destroy’
In the last one year, America’s strategy regarding India has clearly shown dual thinking. What is said about India in the US is often different from the picture presented by the US Embassy in Delhi. In this sequence, while on one hand the partnership between the two countries is being praised, on the other hand the threat of 100% tariff is also being raised.
America talks about increasing bilateral trade
On Wednesday morning, the US Embassy in India posted on The US-India partnership is bringing prosperity that benefits both countries and our people. In this context, a statement from US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore was also shared:
‘Over the last two decades, trade in goods and services in this bilateral economic relationship has increased from $20 billion to $220 billion.’
—Sergio Gore, US Ambassador to India
America is showing double thinking towards India
While the US Embassy and Ambassador Sergio Gore are presenting a picture of rapid growth in bilateral relations, the US Senate on Tuesday advanced a bill with an overwhelming majority. This bill would give US President Donald Trump the authority to impose new sanctions (including potentially 100% tariffs) on countries like India and China for buying oil from Russia.
Trick to impose 100% tariff on India!
The new law will give the US President the authority to impose 100% tariffs on the world’s five largest importers of Russian crude oil and gas. India and China are the largest importers of Russian oil. America has already imposed 50% tariff on India for the same reason.
Senate likely to approve bill this week
Former Republican Senator Lindsey Graham had originally introduced this bill. They are no longer alive. A bill based on the same ideas passed its first procedural hurdle in the Senate on Tuesday by a huge margin of 12 votes to 86.
There is a possibility that this bill may be passed by the Senate by the end of this week and may also be implemented by September.
‘100% US tariff on India will ruin relations’
That is why India’s former Foreign Secretary and diplomat Kanwal Sibal has raised questions on a post of the US Embassy and asked:
‘Is there a threat of imposing 100% tariffs on India? This will ruin relationships. This will destroy the relationship.
