US Attorney behind charges against industrialist Gautam Adani resigns: Here’s why
New Delhi: Breon Peace, the US Attorney who was involved in the charges against billionaire Gautam Adani and his group will be resigning before Donald Trump takes over as US President in January 2025, according to a statement issued by the United States Attorney’s Office. Pearce will step down as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York on January 10, according to the statement.
He will be succeeded by Carolyn Pokorny, currently the First Assistant United States Attorney. Pokorny will become the acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York after January 10, 2025. US President Joe Biden in 2021 appointed Peace to this position. Trump will take office on January 20.
Breon Peace and Adani case
The Adani Group was jolted by US Attorney Breon Peace in November when he charged the Indian conglomerate for what his report alleged was “defrauding” US investors by not revealing the plethora of bribes the Adani group gave in India to win government contracts in India. It amounts to a serious felony under US laws. However, the Adani Group has always been dismissive of the charges and has described them as baseless.
In the face of this serious allegation, Gautam Adani tried to maintain his calm. “What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” the industrialist said when he was delivering his address at the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards in Jaipur.
