US-Iran agreement increases Netanyahu’s troubles, Israeli Prime Minister surrounded from all sides before elections
Washington. The long-running conflict between the US and Iran has finally ended. US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masood Pejeshkian signed the peace agreement on Thursday. This agreement, reached after more than 100 days of tension and devastation, is being seen as a relief at the global level. However, for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this agreement has brought new challenges at both political and strategic levels.
Pressure increased in election year
General elections are to be held in Israel by the end of October this year. At such a time, the agreement between America and Iran has made Netanyahu’s political position difficult. Opposition parties are continuously targeting him. Prominent opposition leader Yair Lapid said in Parliament that the Prime Minister has reached a situation where he will either have to face confrontation with America’s biggest ally or compromise with Israel’s interests.
Challenge from our own government
Netanyahu is facing opposition not only from the opposition but also from his right-wing allies in his coalition government. Hardline leaders and ministers are angry at the deal, which could limit Israel’s freedom of military action.
According to the information, in the US-Iran agreement, Iran has set a condition to stop military activities on other fronts including Lebanon, which was accepted by America. Israel’s right-wing leaders have reacted sharply to this decision.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said on social media that the agreement between Trump and Iran does not apply to Israel. According to him, this agreement does not guarantee the country’s security and Israel is not bound by it.
Corruption case increased the problem
Netanyahu is already facing corruption-related cases amid increasing pressure on the political front. These legal challenges have made their position more vulnerable. In such a situation, the US-Iran agreement has emerged as an additional political crisis for them.
Not getting support even from Trump
Analysts believe that the biggest blow to Netanyahu has come from the stance of US President Donald Trump. According to reports, there were differences between the two leaders regarding Iran for some time. Netanyahu wanted to present an image of “complete victory” to the country by continuing the war, which could give him an advantage in the upcoming elections.
But Trump dealt a blow to Netanyahu’s strategy by giving priority to ending the war and making a compromise. In recent times, there have been reports of tension in the relationship between the two leaders. Political experts say that Trump’s move has made Netanyahu’s domestic politics more complicated.
Difficult path amidst increasing challenges
While the world is considering the agreement between America and Iran as a big step towards peace, it has become a cause of political crisis for Netanyahu. Attacks from the opposition, resentment from allies, legal disputes and America’s changed stance have put him in a situation where every decision before the upcoming elections is going to prove to be very important for him.
