Iranians have welcomed a fragile ceasefire agreement after weeks of Israeli and US bombardment, but many fear the war is far from over, according to news agency AP. Some people have even received a shock of sorts, as US President Donald Trump reneged on his word and threatened to wipe out their civilization just hours before agreeing to an uneasy peace deal.

This ceasefire, which came into effect from Wednesday, has brought peace to a great extent in the capital Tehran. Prior to this, there had been heavy attacks for more than a month, mainly targeting government and security buildings, but many homes were also destroyed. However, several major issues remain unresolved, and the peace deal is already beginning to waver. This is due to Israel’s ongoing war against Iran’s ally Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran’s refusal to fully open the Strait of Hormuz—a vital waterway for the world’s energy supplies.

People in the Iranian capital say they hope an agreement can be reached in peace talks that began on Saturday. He told the AP that his cautious expectation is based on the realization on both sides that more war will not benefit anyone. People said they were tired of weeks of air strikes and warned that even if an agreement was reached, it would take a long time for the situation to return to normal.

Amir Razai Far, 62, said a peace deal is not enough, “because we have suffered too much, the cost is too high, and the burden will have to be borne by the common people.” Shahab Banitaba also raised the question of whether the US can be trusted to abide by any agreement. He said that even if a concrete agreement is reached on paper, “there is still a possibility that the agreement may be broken.”
