Reason and update for postponement of meeting
US Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to go to Switzerland to lead the meeting, but his trip was canceled late Thursday night. The White House said that the arrangements and logistics of this conversation were quite complex, so at present technical talks are waiting to start.
On the other hand, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said that talks through mediators are still going on and the next round of meetings will be planned in the coming days. However, Iran’s Tasnim agency said there has been no confirmation yet on the delegation’s visit to Switzerland.
Lebanon tensions and the impact of the Strait of Hormuz
It is believed that the main reason for this delay in talks is the increased tension between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran says talks on a final agreement will move forward only after stability is achieved on the Lebanon border.
It is a matter of relief that the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz is becoming normal again. America has started lifting its naval restrictions and it is expected that all restrictions will be completely lifted in the next 30 days.
Islamabad Agreement and Qatar’s role
Earlier on June 17, 2026, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had digitally signed the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU). Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif played the role of mediator in this agreement. Under this MOU, a time limit of 60 days has been fixed, in which major issues like Iran’s nuclear program will be discussed.
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani has fully supported this conversation. He said that finding a peaceful solution through dialogue will strengthen the security of the entire region and open new avenues of development. The Government of Switzerland is also helping in this entire process and they have made complete preparations for future meetings.
