US President Trump calls Iran proposal ‘very stupid,’ warns of ‘much more severe’ US action
Donald Trump has sharply criticised Iran’s latest peace proposal, describing it as “very stupid” and warning that the United States could take “much more severe” action if tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate.
Speaking during remarks on the ongoing Iran crisis, Trump said Washington was dissatisfied with Tehran’s latest response during indirect negotiations aimed at easing regional tensions and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime security.
The US President also warned that the United States was prepared to intensify its response if threats to shipping routes or regional stability increased. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, carrying a significant portion of global crude exports.
Trump’s latest comments come amid fragile diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Iran and regional intermediaries, including Pakistan and Gulf countries. Iran recently submitted a response to a US-backed ceasefire and peace framework, reportedly demanding guarantees linked to sanctions relief, sovereignty concerns and a permanent end to military escalation across the region.
However, major disagreements remain unresolved. Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran must fully address concerns surrounding uranium enrichment and regional security activities before any agreement can move forward.
Iranian officials have continued defending Tehran’s position, maintaining that the country’s nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes. Tehran has also warned that it remains prepared to respond to any attacks targeting its territory, nuclear facilities or maritime interests.
The latest exchange comes as global markets closely monitor developments in West Asia due to concerns over oil prices, maritime trade disruptions and broader geopolitical instability.
Recent drone incidents near Gulf countries and continuing military rhetoric from both sides have further strained the already fragile ceasefire environment in the region.
No official breakthrough has yet been announced in the ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
