In 1947, President Harry Truman declared the ‘Truman Doctrine’. It was a promise that the United States would protect countries that seek independence from armed attacks or external pressure. America saved Western Europe from the Soviet threat, which lasted four decades.

Trump’s shift is both strategic and ideological. In the new American strategy, Europe’s problem is not an external threat, but the neglect of Western values, immigration, declining birth rates, and loss of national identity. America is now supporting right-wing leaders like Hungary’s Viktor Orban and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni. There is a different stance on Britain and France. Reports say the US will move closer with Austria, Hungary, Italy and Poland, even if apart from the EU.

Trump’s closeness to Russia increased

The goal of the Truman Doctrine was to stop Soviet expansion. But Trump is getting closer to Russia. Europe imposed sanctions on Ukraine war, America supported. Now Trump considers it a mistake to expel Russia from G8 and is showing friendship with Putin. Ukraine’s strong position or pressure from Europe not on the table.
