India US Relation: America has released its National Security Strategy 2025 amid Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India (4–5 December). The biggest message in this – America now wants to strengthen relations with India again, especially to balance China in the Indo-Pacific.

America has said in the document that it is not possible to counter China’s growing dominance in the South China Sea and Indo-Pacific region alone. Therefore there is a need to work together with countries like India and Japan.

First dispute over Operation Sindoor, then tariff war

The timing of the release of the strategy is also special because tension in India-US relations had increased after Operation Sindoor (6–10 May). US President Donald Trump had claimed that the credit for stopping the war between India and Pakistan goes to him. India rejected this claim, saying that the operation was stopped at the request of Pakistan and not due to US mediation.

After this, Trump cited India’s growing closeness to Russia—especially oil and arms purchases—as the reason for the Ukraine war not stopping. In this anger, he imposed 50% tariff on India.

Trust in India again, America got wise

India did not distance itself from Russia for energy and defense needs and gave a clear message to America by reacting with restraint. Putin’s visit to India seemed to further strengthen India-Russia strategic relations.

The tone of the new strategy indicates that America has realized the mistake of its tariffs and tough stance. Now it is again looking at India as its primary partner.

Double attitude regarding Russia-Ukraine war

The document talks about building “stable strategic relations” with Russia. Despite this, it also mentions that India’s strong economic and military ties with Russia become an obstacle in stopping the Ukraine war. This contradictory statement raises new questions about America’s changing foreign policy.

China’s concern increased, hope for cooperation from India

The center of America’s concern is China’s expansion. America is troubled by China’s increasing aggression in the Indo-Pacific and realizes that it is not possible to stop China alone. Therefore, it is clearly stated in the document that cooperation with India is mandatory.

America’s new strategy clearly indicates that India’s role in the changing global equations has become more important than ever. Be it China, Russia or the global balance of power – America is now trying to bring India at the center of the partnership.
