President Trump invites PM Modi to visit White House

Rubio will hold bilateral talks with Jaishankar on Sunday

Rubio on Sunday met his Indian counterpart Dr. S. Will hold bilateral talks with Jaishankar and attend the Independence Day celebrations of the US Embassy. Rubio will visit Agra and Jaipur on Monday and return to Delhi for the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on Tuesday morning.

People associated with the Ministry of External Affairs said that in the talks between Jaishankar and Rubio, ways to strengthen India-US relations in energy, trade, investment, essential technology and people-to-people transactions can be discussed. He said that the West Asia crisis and its economic impact including energy supply are also expected to be discussed between the two sides.

It is noteworthy that Rubio’s visit to India comes five weeks after Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s three-day visit to Washington DC, which focused on stabilizing relations after a period of uncertainty and tension.

Relations between the two countries took a major downturn after Washington imposed tariffs on India and President Donald Trump made controversial statements about his role in de-escalating India-Pakistan military clashes in May last year. Over the next few months, the US President repeatedly and publicly claimed that he had resolved the military conflict between the two neighbors and saved millions of lives as it headed towards all-out war. At the same time, New Delhi had insisted that the end of hostilities was the result of talks between India and Pakistan and America’s involvement in it had nothing to do with it.
