US Snowstorm Havoc : A powerful snowstorm has wreaked havoc in the northeastern part of America. Areas from Maryland to Maine are covered in heavy snow. Due to this severe weather, more than 10 thousand flights have been canceled between Saturday and Tuesday. More than 5,000 flights were canceled on Monday alone and more than 1,300 flights have already been canceled for Tuesday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. New York’s JFK, Laguardia and Boston’s Logan Airport have been most affected.

Meteorologists have described it as the most powerful storm of a decade, which is being called a ‘bomb cyclone’. ‘Bomb cyclones occur when a storm’s pressure drops by a certain amount in a 24-hour period. This occurs mainly in autumn and winter when icy air from the Arctic reaches the south and collides with warmer temperatures.’ Many areas received more than two feet (60 centimeters) of snowfall. More than three feet of snow has fallen in Warwick, Rhode Island. Due to strong winds and heavy snowfall, a state of emergency has been declared in many states including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

The impact of the storm was so severe that the United Nations had to postpone its Security Council meeting and close its headquarters. In New York City, schools were closed for the first time in six years due to snowfall. However, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said that schools will be opened from Tuesday, which some officials have opposed. The transport system has completely collapsed. Rail and bus services are suspended. Traveling has become extremely dangerous due to slippery roads and low visibility. The administration has appealed to the people to stay in their homes. Delivery services like DoorDash have also halted operations.

The electricity system has also been adversely affected due to the storm. According to PowerOutage.US, more than 5,70,000 homes and businesses on the East Coast have lost power. The situation is worst in Massachusetts and New Jersey. Due to strong winds, workers are facing huge difficulties in restoring power. However, some people are also enjoying this weather. Tourists were seen dancing in Times Square, while some people were seen enjoying sledding. But the Meteorological Department has warned that the danger is not over yet. Another storm may arrive this weekend, which could worsen the situation. The administration has deployed the National Guard and relief work is underway.
