Using a room heater? Know which negligence can cost you dearly

Room heater becomes the biggest need of people during cold season. In many parts of the country including North India, when the temperature drops rapidly, the use of heaters in homes, offices and shops becomes common. However, a little carelessness with this convenient device can prove fatal. Every year in winter, many incidents of fire and electric shock related to room heaters occur, causing huge loss of life and property.

According to experts, misuse of room heater is the biggest danger. Often people keep the heater very close to the bed or start drying clothes on it. This habit is very dangerous. The intense heat from the heater can cause clothes to catch fire, causing the entire room to catch fire within minutes.

Additionally, leaving the heater on overnight also poses serious risks. Continuous operation for a long period of time may cause the heater to overheat, increasing the risk of short circuit or fire. It has been seen in many cases that people leave the heater on while sleeping and turn off the ventilation, which can also lead to suffocation.

Using a plug with old or faulty wiring is also a big mistake. The heater consumes a lot of electricity, so weak wires can get heated and melt and cause fire. Experts advise to always plug the heater in a separate socket and avoid using extension boards.

Extra caution is also necessary in the presence of children and pets. There is a risk of children getting burnt if they play too close to the heater. At the same time, pets can accidentally drop the heater, which can cause a fire.

Fire safety officials say that it is very important to maintain proper distance in the room while using the heater. Keep heaters at least three feet away from curtains, furniture and flammable objects. Also, it is important to switch off the heater before sleeping and regularly check the electrical connections.

Protection from cold is important, but safety is even more important. With a little caution and proper knowledge, room heaters can be used safely. Remember, a small carelessness can lead to a big accident.
