The changing mood of the weather in Uttarakhand has made people feel the rosy cold of winter in the month of May itself. Due to continuous rains in the entire state and cold winds coming from the mountains, a huge drop in temperature has been recorded within the last 24 hours.

From the plains to the hilly areas, the mercury has dropped 10 degrees Celsius below normal. Due to this, even in the plains, people have been suddenly forced to take out light warm clothes and jackets from the wardrobe.

Record fall of mercury in Dehradun and Tehri

According to Meteorological Center data, the maximum temperature in most parts of Uttarakhand on Sunday was recorded much below normal. In just 24 hours, the maximum temperature in the capital Dehradun fell by 7.2 degrees to 26.6 degrees Celsius, which is 9 degrees less than normal. The minimum temperature recorded here was 17.0 degrees.

The chill has increased even more in the hilly area of New Tehri, where the mercury dropped by 10 degrees below normal to reach 18.6 degrees Celsius. 2.2 mm rainfall has been recorded in New Tehri. On the other hand, in the famous tourist city of Mussoorie, after intermittent rains till Sunday afternoon, tourists coming from outside were suddenly seen wrapped in warm clothes.

Major accident averted at Lakhwad Dam project site

Due to heavy rains, a huge amount of debris and stones suddenly fell from the hill in Moi Khad of Lakhwar Multipurpose Dam Project area. Due to being hit by this debris, three Pokeland machines engaged in construction work there were completely buried. When the operators engaged in hill cutting work saw the debris coming, they saved their lives by jumping from the machines and running away, due to which a major accident was averted.

According to eyewitnesses, this incident happened so fast on late Saturday evening that the drivers did not even get a chance to recover. This debris from Moi Khad had reached the main dam construction site along with the water of Lakhwad Band waterfall, hampering the work.

The humidity level in the air reached 80 percent

According to meteorologists, the moisture which was lost in Doon and surrounding areas due to the scorching heat in the past few days, has returned due to continuous rains. On Sunday, humidity level in Dehradun was recorded between 65 to 80 percent. Such a graph of humidity in the air is usually seen only in the winter season. This is the main reason why people are feeling severe chill even in the end of May and beginning of June.

Administrative promptness regarding waterlogging and debris

Due to rain, problem of waterlogging and debris has arisen in many urban areas of Dehradun. After receiving complaints of damage in Salawala, Jakhan and Dovalwala areas, Councilor Bhupendra Kathait, former Councilor Sanjay Nautiyal and Councilor Mohan Bahuguna along with administrative officials inspected the affected areas. Immediately after this, debris was removed from the roads by installing JCB machine.

On the other hand, in view of the waterlogging occurring due to drainage block in Indraprastha Enclave Lane No. 16, the Municipal Corporation has started the construction work of recharge pit in the colony from Sunday. According to the local administration, due to the construction of boundary walls in the vacant plots, the drainage of water here had completely stopped, which is now being rectified.
