'Heights took me to new heights,' says Sooraj Barjatya on winning National Award for Best Director

At the 70th National Film Awards ceremony in New Delhi, Sooraj Barjatya and Neena Gupta were honored by President Draupadi Murmu, marking yet another achievement in their careers. Barjatya, known for his iconic family dramas, received the National Award for Best Director for his film 'Unchai'.

Produced by Rajshri Productions in association with Mahavir Jain Films and Boundless Media, 'Unchai' enthralled the audience with its emotional depth and stunning visuals. Along with Barjatya, veteran actress Neena Gupta won her second National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film.

Reminiscing about his journey with 'Unchai', Barjatya said, “Unchai was not the kind of film people expected from me. It didn't have the grandeur of my earlier works, but it came from my heart. I didn't choose height; It chose me. Today, this award is the perfect culmination of that journey.”

A bold cinematic adventure
Rajshri Productions' 60th film 'Unchai' was shot during the pandemic, which was a time of uncertainty for both filmmakers and audiences. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas, the story explores themes of friendship, hope and resilience. Recalling the challenges of shooting in extreme conditions, Barjatya said, “This film took me to new heights, literally and creatively.” The film's emotional appeal and breathtaking visuals appealed to audiences, confirming that a powerful story transcends traditional filmmaking expectations.

National identity and reflection

Barjatya said, “His victory is thoroughly deserved and it adds to the joy of this recognition.”

a collaborative victory
'Unchai' was a collaborative effort between Rajshri Productions, Mahavir Jain Films and Boundless Media. The success of the film was attributed to the collective effort of everyone from the production team to the star-studded cast, which included Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Sarika and Parineeti Chopra.

Barjatya admitted, “My entire cast was my backbone during the making of Height.” “His faith in me and the film and his willingness to endure such challenging circumstances made this journey unforgettable.”
