Vada Pav among World’s 50 Best Sandwiches, Shawarma takes top spot

New Delhi: One of the most talked-about street foods in India is Mumbai’s Vada Pav. This Maharashtrian street food is loved by many worldwide. Vada Pav is a simple street food sandwich made with pav (dinner rolls), batata vada (a potato fritter) in the centre, and spicy-sweet chutneys. People have loved this Mumbai snack, which has helped Vada Pav secure a place in the World’s 50 Best Sandwiches once again. This year, Vada Pav secured the 39th position on the World’s 50 Best Sandwiches list. It was the only entry from India to make it into the top 50.

Every year, Taste Atlas, the popular food and travel guide, releases a list of the top 50 sandwiches featuring delicious delicacies from around the world. The rankings are compiled based on data and are frequently updated. This year is not the first time Vada Pav has appeared in these global rankings, though. Last year, Mumbai’s famous Vada Pav was ranked 19th worldwide on the World’s 50 Best Sandwiches list.

History of Vada Pav

The Taste Atlas website discussed the history of Vada Pav, stating: “This iconic street food is said to have originated from a street vendor named Ashok Vaidya, who worked near the Dadar train station in the 1960s and 1970s. He thought of a way to satiate the hungry workers, and concluded that the ideal dish should be portable, affordable, and easy to prepare.”

Shawarma Crowned #1 Sandwich

This year, for the World’s 50 Best Sandwiches list, the top spots were secured by Shawarma, Banh Mi (Vietnam), and Tombik Doner (Turkiye). The majority of the top five spots on the list were secured by Vietnamese delicacies, such as Banh Mi, Banh Mi Thit, and Banh Mi Heo Quay.

For the Taste Atlas Awards 2024-25, India received significant recognition for its flavourful cuisine. Entries from India secured top spots in award categories like best breads, best vegetable dishes, best food regions, best food cities, and other lists.
