Held a bat at the age of 4, wore Team India’s jersey at 15; Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s journey from Samastipur to international debut

As soon as Vaibhav wore the blue jersey of Team India against England at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester, a new record was registered in the history of Indian cricket.

At the age of just 15, Vaibhav became India’s youngest international cricketer. They Sachin Tendulkar’s almost 37 year old record broken. This was not just a debut, but the victory of the dreams of the child who had made his debut in the streets of the village and from a small net built behind the house.

Showed cricket skills at the age of 4

Vaibhav was born on 27 March 2011 in Tajpur village of Samastipur district of Bihar. This was the same year when India won the ODI World Cup under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Vaibhav’s father Sanjeev is a Suryavanshi farmer. He first recognized his son’s talent when just four year old Vaibhav started hitting the plastic ball hard. After this, the father used to make his son bowl for hours after returning from the fields every day. Not only this, he also prepared a small practice area behind the house so that his son could practice daily.

Debut in Ranji Trophy at the age of 12

Vaibhav caught everyone’s attention by playing first class cricket for Bihar in January 2024 at the age of just 12. He became one of the youngest players to play Ranji Trophy. After this he represented India in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and scored 176 runs in five matches. Then by scoring a century in just 58 balls in the Youth Test against Australia in Chennai, he made it clear that India has got a new star.

IPL contract in 13 years, century in 14

Vaibhav got the reward for his excellent performance in IPL. At the age of just 13, Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs 1.10 crore. He became the youngest player in IPL history to get a contract. At the age of 14 years and 23 days, he made his IPL debut and surprised everyone by hitting a six off Shardul Thakur on the very first ball. Just nine days later, he scored a century in 35 balls against Gujarat Titans and became the youngest centurion in IPL history.

IPL 2026 changed fate

The 2026 IPL season proved to be the biggest turning point in Vaibhav’s career. He scored 776 runs in 16 matches, hit 72 sixes and became the highest run-scorer in the tournament. Not only this, he created history by winning 5 big awards simultaneously – Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player (MVP), Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season and the award for hitting most sixes. He became the first player in IPL history to do so.

Created a stir in Under-19 and India A also

Even before IPL, Vaibhav had made his mark in international junior cricket. He made India the champion by scoring 175 runs in just 80 balls against England in the Under-19 World Cup final. He was chosen Player of the Series for his excellent performance throughout the tournament. After this he scored 211 runs in the India A tri-series. In the final, he won the trophy for India by playing an explosive inning of 94 runs in 29 balls.

Father’s hard work becomes son’s greatest strength

His father Sanjeev Suryavanshi played the biggest role behind Vaibhav’s success. He used to take his son for regular practice, covering a distance of about 90 kilometers from Samastipur to Patna. Never allowed financial difficulties to become an excuse. Today, as a result of that hard work, a village boy has worn the biggest jersey of Indian cricket.

Now the real challenge begins

Reaching Team India at the age of 15 is no less than a dream, but cricket experts believe that the real test will begin now. If Vaibhav maintains his hard work and consistency, he can become one of the biggest stars of Indian cricket in the coming years.
