Valentine’s Day Special: Beware the Changing Shape of Expressions of Love! The mediums have changed, the intimacy of love remains

Deepak Gaikwad, Mokhada : Valentine’s Day has its roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. Celebrated on February 15, the festival was associated with spring and fertility. In the fifth century, the Christian Church established February 14 as a day to commemorate Saint Valentine. Later in the 15th century, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer associated this day with romance and it became popular as a day of romance.

In the past, handwritten letters, roses and physical gifts were the only means of expressing love. There is a famous legend of Saint Valentine marrying young people in defiance of Emperor Claudius II’s marriage ban. So this day came to be celebrated as a symbol of love, sacrifice and commitment.

But with the passage of time, the way of expressing love has changed radically. The journey that once started with fanciful messages like “Go dove…” has now reached the digital age. Love letters have been replaced by messages. Attractive gift cards, musical cards and gifts are also left behind. Today, love is expressed through Instagram reels, Facebook posts, WhatsApp status and video calling. From the “heart” emoji to specially edited videos, the language of love has become more immediate and public.

On the occasion of Valentine week, various days are celebrated like ‘Rose Day’ on 7th February, ‘Propose Day’ on 8th February, ‘Chocolate Day’ on 9th February, ‘Teddy Day’ on 10th February, ‘Promise Day’ on 11th February, ‘Hug Day’ on 12th February, ‘Kiss Day’ on 13th February and ‘Valentine’s Day’ on 14th February. Each day highlights different feelings of love.
