‘Vande Mataram’ will be played before ‘Jan Gana Mana’, it is mandatory to sing all 6 paras, studies will start in schools after the national anthem.
This year, on the 77th Republic Day on 26 January, the theme of the main parade was kept as Vande Mataram.
‘Vande Mataram’ to be sung before ‘Jana Gana Mana’: The Central Government has issued new guidelines regarding the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. According to the order of the Home Ministry, now ‘Vande Mataram’ will be played in government programs, schools and other formal events and during this it will be mandatory for all the people to stand. This order was issued on January 28, while its information came to light in the media on February 11.
According to news agency PTI, it has been clarified in the order that if the national anthem ‘Vande Mataram’ and the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ are sung or played together, then ‘Vande Mataram’ will be presented first. During this time all the people present will have to stand in alert posture.
According to the order, the day will start with playing of the national anthem in all schools. Under the new rules, all six stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung, the total duration of which is 3 minutes 10 seconds. Till now only its first two stanzas were usually sung.
Will be sung in programs like President’s arrival and flag hoisting
– According to the new guidelines, it will be mandatory to play Vande Mataram on several official occasions including the unfurling of the Tricolour, the arrival of the President at any functions, before and after his speeches and addresses to the nation, and before and after the arrival and speeches of Governors.
– The national anthem can also be sung collectively at informal but important functions attended by ministers or other important persons, provided it is performed with full respect and decorum.
– In the 10-page order, Vande Mataram will also be played at civilian award ceremonies, such as the Padma Awards ceremony or any event where the President is present.
New rules will not apply in cinema halls
However, cinema halls have been kept away from the new rules. This means that it will not be mandatory to play ‘Vande Mataram’ and stand before the movie starts in theaters.
Whereas if the national anthem is played as part of a newsreel or documentary film, it will not be necessary for the audience to stand. The ministry said that standing in such a position could cause disruption and chaos in the demonstration.
India’s national song Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on 7 November 1875 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Navami. It was first printed in his magazine Bangadarshan in 1882 as part of his novel Anandamath. Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram on stage at the session of the Indian National Congress in 1896. This was the first time that this song was sung publicly at the national level. The eyes of thousands of people present in the meeting became moist.
The central government had organized a special discussion last year during the winter session of Parliament on the completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram. There was a huge uproar on this issue in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Congress alleged that the government is making the national anthem an issue in the upcoming elections in West Bengal.
At the same time, BJP had accused Congress of cutting parts of Vande Mataram as part of appeasement politics. BJP had shared a letter of the country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1937, which he had written to Subhash Chandra Bose.
The BJP had alleged that in the letter Nehru had indicated that some lines of Vande Mataram might make Muslims uncomfortable. During the debate in Parliament, former BJP President JP Nadda had said that the national anthem should also be given equal status to the national anthem and the national flag.
PM said- Congress broke Vande Mataram into pieces
PM Modi had initiated the debate on Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha. In his one-hour speech, he had said, ‘Congress surrendered before the Muslim League and tore Vande Mataram into pieces. Nehru felt that this could hurt Muslims.
PM said, ‘Why was Vande Mataram betrayed? What was that power, whose desire overpowered even the feelings of respected Bapu? PM Modi said Vande Mataram 121 times in his one-hour speech.
Why were four verses of Vande Mataram removed?
According to Savyasachi Bhattacharya’s book ‘Vande Mataram: The Biography of a Song’, in a letter written to Subhash Chandra Bose on 20 October 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru had mentioned that the background and language of ‘Vande Mataram’ made some Muslims uncomfortable. He also wrote that its language is so complex that it is difficult to understand without a dictionary.
At that time, communal tension was increasing in the country regarding ‘Vande Mataram’. To Nehru this dispute appeared to be part of an organized conspiracy. In this context, he had also written in his letter about taking advice from Rabindranath Tagore.
After this, on 22 October 1937, the Congress Working Committee decided to remove four of the six stanzas of the original song. Many senior leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Sarojini Naidu were present in this meeting.
