Varanasi: African gold worth Rs 3.54 crore recovered at Cantt railway station, two smugglers arrested

Varanasi, 13 March. A major case of smuggling of African gold into India via Bangladesh has come to light. In this sequence, on the information of informer at Varanasi Cantt Railway Station, a joint team of GRP, RPF and CIB laid siege to Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express and arrested two smugglers. During the search, more than two kilograms of gold biscuits were recovered from them, the value of which is said to be around Rs 3 crore 54 lakh.

Both smugglers are residents of Maharashtra.

According to the GRP, both the accused are residents of Maharashtra and were going to deliver the gold biscuits by train to Delhi via Bengal. On receiving information about the recovery of gold, the team of Custom and Income Tax Department also reached the spot and investigation into the matter has been started.

Fear of international smuggling gang

Prayagraj Zone IG Railway N. Giving information about the case, Kolanchi said that both the smugglers caught are residents of Maharashtra, one of whom calls himself a student and the other a painter. Preliminary inquiry has revealed that both of them have smuggled gold in this manner about 35 to 40 times in the last three months.

According to IG Railways, he was given gold biscuits in Bengal by the smuggling gang and was also given a mobile phone. This gold had to be handed over to some unknown person in the train itself. They were paid only after the delivery was completed.

Investigation has also revealed that the recovered gold was probably brought from African countries, which earlier used to reach Bengal via Bangladesh and from there was supplied to different states of India. In such a situation, the police suspect that an international smuggling gang is active in this case.
