According to religious beliefs, Vat Savitri Vrat is related to the mythological story of Mata Savitri and Satyavan. It is said that Savitri, with her tenacity, intelligence and determination, had regained the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamraj. This year, Jyeshtha Amavasya Tithi has started on 16th May at 05:11 am, while it will end on 17th May at 01:30 am. According to Udaya Tithi, the fast is being observed today itself.

The auspicious time of Vat Savitri Puja will be from 07:12 am to 08:24 am. Whereas Abhijeet Muhurta will be from 11:50 am to 12:45 pm.

On this day, women take bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and worship the banyan tree. During puja, raw cotton is wrapped around the tree. Mythology of Savitri-Satyavan

According to the legend, when Yamraj came to take the life of Satyavan, Savitri pleased him with her penance and eloquence. Savitri asked for three boons from Yamraj and in the last boon she asked for the happiness of “hundred sons”. Yamraj said “Amen”, after which he had to return Satyavan’s life because without Satyavan it was not possible for Savitri to become a mother.
