Venezuela Earthquake: Two powerful earthquakes in Venezuela, huge devastation caused chaos, national emergency imposed

Two very powerful earthquakes occurred in Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing massive destruction and an atmosphere of fear in the entire country. The intensity of these tremors was measured at 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The situation is so serious that the government has declared national emergency in the entire country.

This accident happened on 24 June 2026. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), first there was a shock of 7.2 magnitude and about 40 seconds later an even bigger earthquake of 7.5 magnitude occurred. The epicenter of the incident was in the Montalbán region, which is about 160 to 290 kilometers from the capital Caracas. Experts have called it the most destructive earthquake of the last 126 years.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has imposed a state of emergency in the country. He appealed to the people to remain calm and immediately vacate the damaged buildings. Following the disaster, the capital’s Simón Bolívar International Airport was closed indefinitely due to severe damage and school holidays were declared across the country.

Different information has emerged regarding the death toll. The USGS initially estimated that 10,000 to 100,000 people might be killed. However, the numbers are lower in the official report. Baruta Mayor Darwin Gonzalez confirmed three deaths, while Falcon state Governor Victor Clark said 32 people were hospitalized and 15 were still trapped under the debris.

Earthquake tremors were felt not only in Venezuela, but also in neighboring countries Colombia, Brazil, Aruba and Curaçao. In this difficult time, the United Nations (UN) and many foreign governments have proposed to send humanitarian aid and rescue teams to Venezuela.

Many buildings have collapsed in cities and electricity and internet services have come to a standstill. People remained on the streets for hours out of fear. At the same time, some activists have demanded the government to open social media platform X and VPN services so that people can get information about their loved ones.
