Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro : Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for his third six-year term on Friday. According to reports, Maduro was sworn in as president amid protests and criticism from the US and other countries. Maduro's opponents accuse him of rigging last year's elections. Maduro took the oath at Venezuela's legislative building and also gave an impassioned speech.

Tight security arrangements were made in view of the swearing-in ceremony. The swearing-in was attended by a large crowd of people in nearby streets and a nearby plaza, many of whom wore T-shirts supporting Maduro. Maduro accused his opponents and his supporters in the United States of trying to turn his inauguration into a “world war.”

The president said the failure of his enemies to prevent his swearing-in for a third term is “a great victory” for Venezuelan peace and national sovereignty. He said, “Neither the American government nor the pro-imperialist governments of Latin America have made me president.” I come from the people, I belong to the people and my strength comes from history and the people. I am indebted to the people.
