“Victim Wembanyama” is a spoiled kid: Bayless’ latest attack
The 2026 NBA Finals gave the New York Knicks a historic championship, their first since 1973. On the other side, however, the series left deep wounds in San Antonio, where the Spurs endured a nightmare finish after squandering massive leads at critical moments.
Naturally, Victor Wembanyama was one of the central figures of the series. He carried the Spurs throughout much of the postseason, but he was also responsible for several costly mistakes during the Finals. The comebacks suffered by San Antonio – including the blown 29-point lead in Game 4 and the 16-point collapse in Game 5 – sparked intense debate around the young French star.
Beyond his on-court performances, Wembanyama also faced criticism for several plays deemed overly aggressive, a demeanor some viewed as overly confident, and a few tense exchanges with the media. The situation provided plenty of ammunition for harsher commentators, including Skip Baylesswho even began referring to him as “Animal Victim”.
There’s still a lot of spoiled kid in this young man. I’m not going to give him the ‘he’s only 22 years old’ pass on this one… Did you completely dominate? You lost in five games

Ric Bucher urges patience: “They’re just beginning the journey”
Speaking on his On the Ball podcast, Fox Sports analyst Ric Bucher broke down the Spurs’ Finals disappointment while also defending the young superstar.
According to Bucher, many observers are overlooking a crucial detail: this was the first real high-level playoff experience for both Wembanyama and much of San Antonio’s roster.
This is Wemby’s first playoff experience, and it’s the first for many of these Spurs players. They probably shouldn’t even be on a stage this big at this point
Ric Bucher
Bucher emphasized that the growth of a young team inevitably comes through mistakes and difficult lessons.
We’re watching them learn all of this in real time, yet people already want to make definitive judgments about what Victor Wembanyama is or isn’t. It creates content and attracts attention, but it’s not a very useful approach
Ric Bucher
The analyst then broadened the discussion to the way many modern sports debates are constructed, arguing that parts of the television industry prioritize controversy over genuine analysis.
According to Bucher, the primary goal is often not accuracy, but generating immediate attention.
A lot of these rushed judgments are made to create the most compelling content possible in the shortest amount of time. Accuracy, authenticity, and depth are sacrificed in the name of numbers

Bucher fires back at Bayless: “It’s just clickbait”
The sharpest part of Bucher’s comments, however, was reserved for Bayless himself.
The veteran commentator had argued that Wembanyama lacks the so-called clutch gene – the ability to elevate his game in the biggest moments. Bucher dismissed that assessment outright.
Skip Bayless is now saying Victor Wembanyama doesn’t have the clutch gene because of what he showed in this series. That’s something that makes me laugh
Ric Bucher
Bucher then doubled down, accusing Bayless of simply chasing reactions from the audience.
I’m all for strong opinions and honest criticism of athletes, regardless of how popular they are. But this is pure clickbait designed only to generate more clickbait
Ric Bucher
At just 22 years old, Victor Wembanyama remains one of the most extraordinary talents in the NBA. The 2026 Finals exposed weaknesses and areas for improvement, but for many observers – including Bucher – turning one playoff defeat into a definitive verdict on his future is far too premature.
