VIDEO: 33 people killed in horrific riot in Mozambique prison on Christmas Day, 1534 prisoners escaped
Maputo: 33 people died and 15 were injured in a prison riot on Christmas Day in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. General Commander of Mozambique Police Bernardino Rafael informed about this incident on Wednesday. The riot occurred amid ongoing civil unrest following a disputed election in October.

The Supreme Court of Mozambique on Monday confirmed the election victory of the ruling party AFRELIMCO for a long time, after which the opposition parties and their supporters called it rigged and called for new elections across the country. Rafael blamed the protests outside the prison for the riot, while Justice Minister Helena Kida said that the unrest had started inside the prison and had nothing to do with the protests outside. The unrest resulted in 33 deaths and 15 injuries near the prison. Rafael told the media that the identity of the dead and injured is not clear at the moment. About 1,534 people had escaped from jail in this incident, out of which 150 have been re-arrested so far. Expressing concern, Rafael said that we are concerned as a country, this is a serious problem for the citizens and security forces of Mozambique. We expect an increase in crime in the next 48 hours.

Mozambique's Interior Minister said on Tuesday that at least 21 people were killed in the unrest in the country following the Supreme Court decision. Earlier, civil society monitoring organization Platform DeSide had said that at least 130 people have been killed in clashes with police since the protests.
