A simple friendly match, where old friends had taken to the field with laughter and the spirit of the game, suddenly turned into a tragedy that shocked the entire community.

A player died after collapsing on the field during a friendly cricket match held in Beruwala, Sri Lanka on Sunday. This match was a part of the Cricket Carnival organized by an Old Boys’ Association. The deceased has been identified as Zulfiqar, whose age is said to be between 45 and 46 years as per local reports. He was taking part in the match being played between the alumni of a prominent Muslim school in China Fort area of Beruwala.

Orgy of death on the pitch
According to eyewitnesses, Zulfikar suddenly fell on the crease while batting. The match was also being telecast live, in which it was seen that he was playing after scoring six runs in three balls, when this heartbreaking incident happened. The score at that time was 37/5 in 3.4 overs and play was immediately stopped. People present at the spot immediately tried to help him and he was taken to Beruwala Regional Hospital, however, according to hospital sources, he had died before reaching there. After this incident the whole atmosphere became sad. Players, organizers and spectators are all in shock. The entire tournament has been postponed indefinitely, as the local cricket community tries to understand and accept this tragic incident.

There are initial fears that Zulfiqar may have suffered a heart attack, although officials are yet to officially confirm this. Beruwala Police has started investigating the case and the medical report is awaited. At the same time, tributes are being paid to him in Beruwala. People are sharing their memories on social media of a player who came just to enjoy the game with his old friends, but could never return home.
