Vietnam joins Japan as kings of Asian football qualifiers in 2025

The nation successfully qualified for all seven continental tournaments concluded in 2025, covering men’s and women’s football at various age levels, as well as futsal.

Vietnam football teams scored a total of 71 goals across these qualifying campaigns without conceding a single goal. Across all qualifiers, including futsal, Vietnam played 22 matches, winning 21 and drawing just one.

In women’s football, the national team under coach Mai Duc Chung swept their 2026 Asian Cup qualifying group in July. They defeated the Maldives, UAE, and Guam, scoring 17 goals while keeping a perfect clean sheet record.

The youth teams followed suit with similar dominance. At the U20 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers in August, coach Okiyama Masahiko’s squad won all three games against Singapore, Hong Kong and Kyrgyzstan, scoring 14 goals and conceding none.

At the U17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers in October, the squad, led by Masahiko, beat Guam and Hong Kong with six goals scored and another clean sheet record.

Success was not limited to the women’s side. In September, coach Kim Sang-sik’s team won all three matches against Bangladesh, Singapore and Yemen, scoring four goals and maintaining a clean sheet at the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Most recently, the Vietnam squad under coach Cristiano Roland achieved a five-star run with victories over Singapore, the Northern Mariana Islands, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia to qualify for the U17 Asian Cup.

The nation also dominated in futsal. The men’s team, led by coach Diego Giustozzi, won all four of their matches at the Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers in September, scoring 20 goals and conceding just three against Hong Kong, China and Lebanon.

Vietnam also qualified for the Women’s Futsal Asian Cup in January with two wins and a draw against Myanmar, Macau and Taiwan, scoring 28 goals and conceding three.

Vietnam stands as the only team in Southeast Asia to achieve this feat in 2025, while regional rival Thailand failed to qualify for the Women’s Asian Cup.

The only pending qualifying campaign is the 2027 Asian Cup, which concludes in March 2026. Vietnam currently has a strong chance to qualify, with a crucial match against Malaysia remaining, a task that may become easier if Malaysia faces sanctions from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for using ineligible players.
