An international school in northern Vietnam charging tuition of up to VND1.1 billion (US$42,000) a year has been ordered to suspend student enrollment after authorities found it was operating without the required licenses.

The Hung Dao Ward People’s Committee in Hai Phong on Jan. 14 said Shattuck-St. Mary’s International School Vietnam must stop enrolling students and halt all educational activities until it completes the legal approval process required for establishment and operation.

According to local authorities, the school has not been able to provide official decisions from competent agencies approving its founding or its educational activities, despite having enrolled students since August 2025.

As of mid-January, the school had 33 students, ranging from primary to high school levels, including both Vietnamese and foreign nationals.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s International School Vietnam has been promoted as an American-style international day and boarding school. The institution was established in 2023, with Binh Duong International Investment Joint Stock Company listed as the investor.

Information provided to parents said the school offers classes from pre-primary through grade 10, follows what it describes as a 100% American-standard curriculum, and employs teaching staff who are claimed to be 90% American nationals. Annual tuition ranges from about VND350 million to more than VND1.1 billion, not including additional fees.

On the morning of Jan. 15, the school’s website showed a maintenance notice and was inaccessible.
