Vietnamese travelers lead Asia in cutting environmental impact: Agoda
In Vietnam, interest in environmental protection has increased in recent years, especially around issues such as plastic waste, marine conservation, and climate resilience in popular coastal destinations.
Vietnam’s popular destinations such as Phu Quoc, Ha Long and Da Nang already launched clean-up campaigns to improve their images among foreign tourists.
Taiwanese travelers ranked second in Asia, with 23% prioritizing sustainable travel, followed by those from Thailand and South Korea, according to Agoda’s February survey of 1,036 participants across eight Asian markets.
Beyond environmental concerns, Vietnamese travelers are also highly aware of the social and economic impact of their trips, Agoda said.
More than a quarter (28%) say the most important outcome of sustainable travel is ensuring tourism spending benefits local communities, while 45% believe supporting economic growth for local businesses is the greatest impact tourism can have when managed responsibly together underscoring a strong desire to support destinations and local livelihoods.
This mindset aligns with broader trends in Vietnam’s tourism sector where community-based tourism has been gaining momentum in destinations across the country.
Five villages in Vietnam have been recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as “Best Tourism Villages in the World”: Tan Hoa in central Quang Tri Province, Thai Hai in northern Thai Nguyen Province, Tra Que in central Da Nang, Lo Lo Chai in northern Tuyen Quang Province, and Quynh Son in northern Lang Son Province.
